         Method Statement for Installation of Wall and Floor Tiles

2. SCOPE OF WORKS

2.1 General Description
        
The Scope of this method statement is to outline the general requirements and precautionary measures which should be taken into consideration during installation of wall and floor tiles and to ensure that works are according to approved shop drawings, standards and project specification.

2.4  Site Planning and Preparation

·         All concrete surface where the tiles must be installed shall be free from any concrete laitance and any foreign materials.
·         All surface preparation and waterproofing inspection (for wet areas) shall be completed & approved by Engineer prior to installation.
·         All materials and shop drawing shall be approved by Engineers prior to any activities.
·         Mock-up Inspection must be done prior to start of Tile Installation.
·         All HSE Permits shall be secured ahead of the time.

2.5  Work Methodology

2.5.1     Material Storage and Handling

a.    The materials delivered at site shall be carefully off-loaded as per manufacturer’s instructions by deploying necessary / adequate manpower in such a way that no damage is caused. (It will be off loaded by the supplier using their own lifting equipment and gears.)
b.    Store the materials on elevated platforms, under cover & in a dry location.
c.     It shall be ensured that the delivered materials are in compliance with the approved material submittal.
d.    Any discrepancies or damages found shall be notified and reported to the Engineers for further action, notification shall be sent to the supplier.
e.    Material found not suitable for site use shall be removed from the site immediately and replaced with suitable material.

2.5.2     Wall Tile Installation

a.    Prior to start installation activities, refer to the approved shop drawings related to the installation area & ensure that materials were as per approved material submittal.
b.    Incoming material inspection must be done with the consultant prior to installation to verify its compliance to the approved material submittal.
c.     Waterproofing Inspection and Leak test on wet areas shall be completed prior to start installation.
d.    MEP Clearance on all areas related to the installation must be obtained.

e.    Tile edges will be accurately cut to a close fit where necessary, at abutments, around electrical pipes and other openings.
f.      Movement Joints not less than 6 mm wide are to be provided as per approved shop drawing.
g.    Corner Trim to be used to be used for fixation.
h.    Tile adhesive shall be prepared and applied as per manufacturers recommendation.

i.      The tiles are to be pressed firmly into the adhesive with a twisting/sliding action, tapped firmly into position and cleaned as soon as the bedding is complete.
j.      The finished surface of the tiles should be plumb and true such when checked with a 3 m straight edge no gap exceeds 3 mm.
k.     The joints shall be even, approximately 2 mm wide and where tile without spacer lugs are used, spacer pegs of suitable and even thickness shall be inserted between the tiles as the work proceeds.
l.      The joints are to be grouted by approved grouting material after the adhesive has set and not less than 48 hrs after fixing. The grout shall be well worked into the joints so that they are completely filled and finished flush.
m.   Excess/Surplus grout shall be cleaned off using damped or wet cloth.
n.    Final Inspection shall be requested for Engineers approval and acceptance.


2.5.3     Floor Tiles Installation

a.    Prior to start installation activities, refer to the approved shop drawings related to the installation area & ensure material are as per approved material submittal.
b.    Waterproofing Inspection and Leak test on wet areas shall be completed prior to start installation.
c.     Incoming material inspection must be done with the consultant prior to installation to verify its compliance to the approved material submittal.
d.    After casting of required thickness of screed as per design requirements, surface shall be suitable for floor coverings, areas to be tiled shall be cleaned and dampened until absorption ceases and the level of the finished floor shall be established by the surveyor.
e.    MEP Clearance on all areas related to the installation must be obtained.
f.      Double direction horizontal layout of tiles to be installed must be checked and approved by the Engineer prior to proceeding the installation.
g.    Tile adhesive  shall be prepared and applied as per manufacturers recommendation.
h.    The bedding mortar for tiles 10 mm thickness or less are used in which case the bedding is not to exceed 15 mm shall be levelled and tamped with a straight edge board. 
i.      The bedding mortar is to be lightly dusted with dry cement sprinkled lightly troweled level until the surface becomes damp. The tiles are then to be laid on the bedding and beaten firmly into position with a wooden beater to ensure a true surface and contact between the tiles and bedding is complete.
j.      Installed floor tiles shall be correctly positioned at the time they are placed with joints using tile spaces as specified on the approved shop drawings. 
k.     Tiles are to be neatly and accurately cut to a close fit where necessary at abutments and around outlets, pipes and other MEP services.
l.      Tile to be laid level or to 1% slopes (in wet areas), if required. Tolerance in level for a flat floor to be maximum of ±3 mm. Particular care is to be taken in wet areas to prevent low spots.

m.   Prior to application of grout, ensure proper cleaning of joint.
n.    Grouting joints to be carried out within a period of 24 hrs of the of the laying of the tiles so that the grout will attach each self firmly to the bedding. Avoid disturbing the tiles, walking boards are to be used during grouting application.
o.    Remove surplus grout with a sponge, for dry grout use cloth for cleaning.
p.    Prohibit foot and wheel traffic tiled floors for at least seven days after grouting is completed.
q.    Final Inspection shall be requested for Engineers approval and acceptance.
